7.1. Basic Acoustic Terms

In this chapter, the nomenclature according to DIN EN ISO 3744 and DIN EN ISO 3746 is used, there may be overlaps between the formula symbols used in other chapters.

Acoustics describes the study of vibrations in solids, liquids and gases. Sound is divided into the following types (see Figure 7.1.):

  • Tone: sinusoidal pressure curve
  • Sound: superposition of different tones
  • Noise: arbitrary distribution of sound pressure in time and amplitude
